I’m a 23-year-old bloke in Canada, and my balding has sped up quite a bit over the last three years. Got a bit of a bald spot on top, and my hairline has definitely taken a few steps back.
I’m seriously considering hair plugs or a transplant, but I’ve got no clue how effective they actually are. If you’ve had one, was it worth the cost? Does your hair look natural? How full did it end up post-surgery? Would you do it again?
I’m 32 and have been on Propecia for eight years. Ask me anything.
I get why you want to keep your hair, but a transplant should never be your first move. The transplant doesn’t stop the process, you’re just shifting patches of grass onto a lawn that isn’t getting watered and is full of rocks. The rest will still die.
Get on Propecia first and at least stabilise your hair loss. It also strengthens your follicles, reducing the risk of shock loss if you do go ahead with a transplant.
Fighting hair loss is not a quick fix. Be ready for the long haul.
I know three people who have had it done. Two were younger guys, and one was an old boss of mine. If you have a decent doctor, it can look pretty good.
The problem is, you will likely keep going bald unless you wait until you are older. That means you could end up with a perfectly good transplant area while the rest keeps thinning out behind or around it.
Hey man, I’m 23 years old and bald as a cueball at this point. Trust me, I’m not one of the ones who looks good bald. Obviously I’m not one providing an answer for the specific question you’re asking, but I think that you need to really think about whether or not that is worth it (hair transplant surgery). It IS expensive and it isn’t even guaranteed to provide good looking results, I can tell you that much. Ask yourself this:
How would you actually look bald? Seriously, some guys look better bald than they do with a full head of hair. This is probably not the case with most guys (as any woman will tell you) but for some, certainly. See: The rock, vin diesel, jason statham, Yul Brynner
How crucial is the difference in appearance to your life? For me, I didn’t give as much of a shit since I’m an engineer, not a model. Also, I made the lifestyle-based decision that I should stop focusing/worrying as much about my appearance as what I’m actually doing for myself and for society as a whole.
Basically, really reflect on if it is something that it is that important to you.
