Started losing my hair at 15, and now, three years later, I’m finally ready to be honest about it and ask for advice. Tried everything from Rogaine, natural oils (avocado, olive, castor, all that lot) but nothing’s worked. Just want to feel confident again, and I’ve searched everywhere for an answer.
If you’ve found something that actually works be it a product, treatment, or whatever I’d really appreciate the help. Everyone keeps saying, ‘You’re too young for this,’ but here we are.
Started thinning/balding at 18. Just accept it. Shave it off, save yourself the time, stress, and money, and within a month or two, you’ll be shockingly glad you did.
Promise. You’ll develop a whole new appreciation for beanies, and even simple things like a soft blanket. Honestly, it’s surprisingly nice. But if you’re balding now and try to fight it, you’ll be throwing money and time at it for the rest of your life.
If your hair loss is genetic which it is for most blokes there’s nothing you can do. No cure, simple as that.
Have a word with a doctor if you want to look into ways to slow it down, but it’s only delaying the inevitable.
A hair transplant’s an option if you’ve got the cash for it, but I read somewhere they don’t do it on younger lads because your hair loss pattern hasn’t settled yet.
Personally, I’d say just shave it off and be done with it. The sooner you do it, the easier it’ll be.
Not a doctor, but a fellow bloke who’s been through it. Started receding at 15, noticeable by 19, Norwood 3V at 21. Hated every second of it. Tried everything, microneedling, Rogaine, finasteride, ketoconazole shampoo. Those are the big three, minus microneedling. Wouldn’t bother with that, risk of infection and all that
Rogaine’s an option, but be warned, you’ll go through big shedding cycles. Probably your best bet if you’re young, though. You can go on finasteride after 18, but I’d advise against it. I think DHT plays a much bigger role than people realise—height, masculinity, all of it. I’d say try to hold off till 22. I started at 21, just before turning 22, and honestly, I wish I’d waited a bit longer. Still on it now at 30, and I’ve kept what I had. Worth it for the peace of mind alone.
Couldn’t deal with the idea of going fully bald and shaving it all off. It’s in my genetics, and I know I’d be totally bald. Do your research, have a word with your doctor. If you’re young, stick to topicals for now. But if you’ve still got enough hair that you like the look of, get on fin and stop stressing over it. Nothing else you can do, really.
Shave it. I know plenty of blokes really hate losing their hair, but for me, I clipped it dead short and that was that. Like the fact I can just do it myself at home, no more barbers, no faffing about with styling or drying. Just jump out of the shower and job done.
Totally get that not every bloke likes how they look with a shaved head, but it’s better to accept it than fight a losing battle. Only real option is an expensive hair transplant, but even that must have its downsides. Until there’s some proper ‘magic’ fix like popping a pill or getting a jab that actually works, if that ever happens best to accept your hair’s packed its bags and isn’t coming back.
Gave up fighting it. It’s just hair. Was a bit of a downer, still is, but that’s life. Meanwhile, there’s my dad swanning about with a full head of hair. Well, who’s got working kidneys, Dad? Me!
If you’ve been dealing with this from a young age, there could be an underlying cause. Best to see a dermatologist and have a chat with your GP to check for any vitamin deficiencies.
A mate of mine started losing his hair in his late teens, and it turned out he was low on several key vitamins. He was put on a strict diet and took supplements to sort it. Took about a year, but he managed to reverse the effects.
I was pretty paranoid in my early 20s when it started, but my hair loss has been fairly minor and has stayed about the same since. Just a bit of recession at the corners of my hairline.
Honestly, there’s not much you can do about it. You could try finasteride, I suppose. though I’m not sure if that’s what you were referring to when you mentioned being told you were too young. I didn’t bother with it myself because of the potential side effects. After all, what’s the point of having hair if your erections are soft and your libido’s shot? That said, I’ve heard it works for most people.
Another option is a hair transplant. I know someone who got one, and you’d never be able to tell unless he cuts his sides really short, where you can clearly see the hair is thinner because it was used for the transplant. The problem is, you never know if you’ll keep losing hair behind the transplanted area, so it’s best to hold off until later in life. My dermatologist told me you should ideally wait until your late 20s for stuff like this.
Or you could just accept it and shave it. Some guys pull off the shaved head look well, especially if they grow a beard. Others, let’s just say, don’t look quite as good. it depends on your facial features and head shape, among other things.
I shaved my head and didn’t waste time crying over my lack of hair. I’ve been losing it since I was a teenager, and back then, I decided that once it reached a certain point, I’d just give in and shave it off. I’ve seen countless blokes trying to hang on to their hair, and it looks terrible. I didn’t want to be one of them.
I knew a guy who was only slightly losing his hair. It was thinning a bit, but by the time he hit his 30s, it still looked fine. He spent thousands on Rogaine over the years, and honestly, I’m not sure it did anything. It’s just not worth it. From my experience, those treatments don’t do much except give you false hope.
