How do you take care of your hair?

Alright lads, I’ve had the same haircut my entire life. Then today, I watched American Psycho and was honestly blown away by how much effort Bateman put into his hair. Got me thinking how do men actually take care of their hair properly?

I’ve seen plenty of blokes with incredible cuts and hair that just looks… healthier. Feels like I’m behind the curve. Do you have a proper routine? Any go-to products?

PS: I’m more into classic haircuts, so any advice on that would be much appreciated.

dont ever use wax, i think that was one of the reason for my balding.

It depends on a fair few factors like hair length, texture, even lifestyle. I’ve got thick, wavy, shoulder-length hair, and honestly, my routine is pretty simple.

I use high-quality shampoo and conditioner, but I only shampoo about three times a week since overdoing it strips the natural oils. Condition every day, though. Avoid hair dryers if you can, since heat damages it, and try not to rest your head on anything for too long when it’s wet.

Once you’ve got longer hair, ditch the pomade and gels. Personally, I don’t use anything, but if you need a bit of hold, a light hairspray does the job.

Thanks for sharing :pray:t2: I’ve got slightly wavy hair probably 2B or 2C.

What if I used a hair dryer with a heat protection product? Would that still cause damage, or is it alright as long as I keep the heat low?

I’d honestly say avoid hair dryers altogether. The only time I use one is on the cold setting, and even then, rarely. Best to let it air dry or wrap it in a towel, depending on how long your hair is.

Thanks for the advice. How does a cold hair dryer actually benefit the hair?

all i can say is do not over use spray for your hair eat healthy foods, take fish oil and multivitamins. All of this i think is enough. Believe me you dont want to be bald like me

It doesn’t benefit your hair, but it’s better than hot air. The blow dryer will still do its job, but instead of blasting it with heat and causing damage, cold air dries it without wrecking it.

Thanks, mate! I’ll keep that in mind.

Ah, I see. But it won’t straighten it, I reckon.

I’ve got a similar hair type (2B/C), and I prefer to avoid hair dryers altogether. I get that they’re convenient, but I’d rather wait an hour or two or just turn up somewhere with slightly damp hair.

Tried a hair dryer a few months ago just to see what would happen and it absolutely fried my hair, and it took months to sort out. Heat protectants help, but it’s tricky to apply them properly to cover everything. If you’re set on using one, I’d go for the cold setting with a diffuser.

Had the same experience with a hair dryer. Tried changing barbers once, and he used it without asking. Didn’t see it coming, and by the time I realised, he was already at it. Didn’t want to stop him mid-dry, so I just let it happen.

Luckily, all it took was a wash, and two hours later, my hair was back to normal. Now, I just get my haircut, wash it with shampoo, and forget about it again until my next shower, usually three days later.

PS: I’m more into classic haircuts, so any advice on that would be much appreciated.

Ask your stylist for the “Ivy League”

I cut my own hair, shampoo every three to four days, and condition every few days. I also take supplements like biotin, fish oil, and a multivitamin.

Depends on your hair type. Mine’s curly, so I’ve got a pretty specific routine. I wash it with curling shampoo two to three times a week, followed by a curling leave-in conditioner. If I’m feeling fancy, I use coconut oil before the shower. If I’m heading out, I’ll add some curling gel and a bit of sea salt spray with some scrunching.

Overall, conditioning is key. Shampoo dries out your scalp, so two to three times a week is plenty. Finding the right products is just as important, so experiment and see what works best for you. If you know your hair type, you can get proper recommendations. Cantu, for example, is great for curly hair.

I really like it, it is good :raised_hands:

Nice one. Got any recommendations for a multinational brand?

Cheers for sharing :raised_hands: I’ll do a bit of research and drop back in with an update on how I end up taking care of it.

When the barbers shut during the COVID nonsense, I looked up how to cut my own hair on YouTube and bought some clippers. Saves a fair bit of money over time if you can put up with a few dodgy haircuts while you figure it out.

Did the same thing. Also bought a hat to cover up the absolute state of my haircut.
